Abstract

The paper denotes how ageing leads to loneliness in a surging manner in Iran. To conduct the survey, Tehran City was selected as the universe of study. Because of increasing longevity in Iran in recent year; 76 years for females and 72 years foe males, women are more likely than men to lose spouse more than ever before. Such women who become widows, face hard conditions due to lack of enough infrastructures. The emerging conditions lead to numerous unfavorable circumstances for these widows. Shortage of income, social security and pensions during the third age make the remaining spouse very vulnerable. These widows usually face impaired social links and relations. The paper denotes how the loss of interactions within such ageing people become disastrous and demoralizing. Many of the remaining spouses experience poverty at this stage of life. Such senior citizens require planned supports and services, and also effective projections for the coming years. The present survey was conducted on 584 lonely and aging people of the two genders. The survey is based on the hypothesis: "Women are more vulnerable than men due to the impact of the death of one's spouse".
