Rural - Urban Balance as a Basis of Socio-Economic Development in Iran

Abstract

The paper evaluates how the rural-urban migration affects productivity and quality of life of the residents in both rural and urban areas. The process of modernization is highly responsible for the change, and a motivator for rural-urban migration not only in Iran, but in China, India and many other developing countries. The newly-emerging scenario is creating many unexpected issues. The paper proposes as strategy in which rural and urban; agriculture and industry benefit each other. The paper concludes that rural-urban balance optimistically leads to socio-economic development and sustainable growth and integration. On the other hand, raising urbanization leads to declining farmland areas. The paper reflects the challenges, merits and demerits of the present transformation. However, the unbridled change needs to be under scrutiny.
