Purpose: To study ocular morbidity among motorcycle taxi drivers in Parakou.
Patients and methods: This was a descriptive study with prospective data collection performed from April 4 to June 28, 2017 at Parakou teaching hospital in the north of Benin. Motorcycle taxi drivers were recruited from their parking lot and screened/examined for detection of any ocular disease and measurement of visual acuity
Results: The mean age of participants was 39.1 years +/- 11, 4 years. Drivers wearing Helmet accounted for 23.75% of the study population. Visual acuity was incompatible with motorcycle riding among 25%. Predominant ocular diseases were ametropia (67.5%), conjunctival diseases dominated by pterygium (21.25%), and cataracts at varying degrees (11.25%). Incompatible visual acuity was statistically associated with the occurrence of accidents (p=0.04).
Conclusion: Motorcycle taxi drivers with incompatible visual acuity to driving represent a significant proportion. Ophthalmological consultation must be required prior delivering of motorcycle driver licence.
