The Spectral Symptoms of Autism: The Scriptural-Nosographical Narrative from the Christian Perspective

Keywords : Autism, Autistic Symptoms, Gospel, Jesus (Christ), Saint Mark

Abstract

In tracing the first recorded case of autism, the author came across a passage on a boy purportedly identified with autism found in three of the four gospels in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. The case probably happened sometime around AD 30-32, when a father with his son afflicted with autistic symptoms brought him to seek healing from Jesus Christ and His disciples. In this paper, the author has taken the passage from the gospel according to Saint Mark (Chapter 9, Verses 17-29) from the New Testament of the Christian holy book to examine the case. The author’s goal of this paper is his attempt to find out if there is some form of a treatment for autism available or recorded in the Christian scripture but has not been known, discovered or fully understood. All the scriptural verses cited in this paper are taken from the New International Version (NIV) of the Holy Bible unless stated otherwise.
