Abstract

Vietnam has a dense natural river network, distributed along the length of the country, very convenient and a great potential for inland waterway development. The whole country has more than 3,500 rivers and canals (more than 3,000 rivers, intra-provincial canals and more than 400 rivers and inter-provincial canals). Most rivers flow into the sea through 124 estuaries, with a total length of more than 80,500 km; of which, about 42,000 km of rivers and canals are capable of exploiting water transport. Every year, inland waterway transport is responsible for transporting nearly 18% of goods, 6.8% of passengers in the total transport of the whole industry. The average growth rate is from 8-12% / year. In addition, inland waterway transport has many advantages such as low freight rates, convenient for transporting super-sized and super-weight goods. In Vietnam, there are 3,500 rivers and canals flowing into the sea through 124 river mouths with a total length of about 80,500km, of which 42,000km of river mouths are capable of developing water transport. In addition, there are 272 inland waterways ports and 8,730 seaports. This is really great potential for developing Vietnam's inland waterway transport industry.
