Abstract

There are two categories of hereditary traits found in a child i.e. physical traits and mental traits. Physical traits include eye-colour, white forelock of hair, colour-blindness, blood type, skin colour, height and several other bodily features. Mental traits include intelligence and musical talents etc. So, every child comes to the world with certain physical and mental characteristics. He has adopted the qualities from his parents and ancestors. O.B Douglas and B.F holland define heredity as “one’s heredity consists of all the structures, physical characteristics, functions or capacities derived from parents’ other ancestry or species”. The influence of biological inheritance on the development of an individual has been viewed in Sanskrit literature. Ravan, Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana were the son of Vishrava and Kaikeshi. The character of Ravan and Kumbhakarna is similar to their mother but the character of Vibhishana is similar to his father. We can observe the influence of hereditary transmission on Ramayana, Mahabharat, Madhyamavyayoga, Raghuvamsa, Uttararamacarita and Abhijnanasakuntala.
