Burnout as Existential Crisis: Integrating Logotherapeutic and Empirical Perspectives on Meaning Loss

Keywords : burnout, meaning in life, logotherapy, existential analysis, existential frustration, Viktor Frankl, sense of coherence, work motivation

Abstract

The article argues that burnout is primarily an existential deficit rather than just an energy deficit, characterized by the erosion of perceived meaning in work and life. By integrating Viktor Frankl's logotherapy, Maslach's classical burnout theory, and contemporary meaning research, the author proposes that burnout is a manifestation of existential meaning loss. The research maps the triad of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment onto deeper structures of meaninglessness and self-alienation, advocating for an existential reframing of burnout in clinical and preventive practices.
